Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship

The University of Connecticut Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is designed for board-eligible or certified orthopaedic surgeons who wish to specialize in academic sports medicine. The fellowship is balanced between the clinical and research aspects of sports medicine.

Clinical activities include working with the four attending fellowship-trained and experienced sports physicians in their offices and the operating room.

Rotations

The fellow works closely with two attendings during six-week rotations throughout the year, following them in their clinics and the operating room. The fellow works opposite a PGY-5 resident on his/her sports rotation. Throughout the year a fellow reading list, divided by topic, is read and reviewed. Each Thursday morning, the fellow and resident cover the topics/articles together presenting them to the attendings. In addition, there are more formal journal clubs set up each month. These sessions review pertinent articles from sports journals and formally review current standards of care for different sports related issues.

Research

Time during each week is also set aside for research and it is hoped that three separate projects will be completed during the fellowship year. These projects are presented at the end of the year at graduation and in an annual Fellow’s Day at West Point Military Academy.

Projects are either clinical or basic science in nature. A newly developed Bioskills Lab is available for lab research projects as well as an Instron machine in the Department’s Biomechanical Lab. This lab, under the direction of Douglas Adams, Ph.D., has produced several important studies over the past years and is actively pursuing several new topics.

What Else Should I Know?

The fellowship takes place at the UConn Health Center and the private offices of the fellowship attendings. Clinical activities also take the fellow to the training rooms of the Hartford Wolfpack and Trinity College, where the fellow is the primary orthopaedic consultant for the athletes there.

The Greater Hartford region and Farmington Valley are family-friendly areas with easy access to parks and rivers for outdoor activities including hiking, canoeing and mountain biking.

Most fellows and their families have found affordable housing within 10 to 15 minutes of the UConn Health Center.

Hartford County is centrally located with good highway access. New York City and Boston are less than two hours away. Connecticut and Rhode Island beaches are even closer.
