Basic Science
The UConn Health Center has a rich tradition of excellence in
musculoskeletal research in both the medical and dental
disciplines. National and international scientists and
clinicians in the New England Musculoskeletal Institute are
pursuing research in a variety of areas including bone repair,
osteoporosis, cartilage metabolism, soft tissue repair, stem
cell therapies, tissue engineering and understanding the
pathophysiology of bone metastasis.
A new initiative within the New England Musculoskeletal
Institute is to promote collaboration among clinicians and
scientist within the medical and dental schools to promote new
treatment strategies in bone and cartilage repair.
In addition, our scientists are among those working on
innovative studies looking at the potential use of stem cells to
treat musculoskeletal problems. In 2006, the University was
awarded $12 million from the state of Connecticut to support
stem cell research projects.
We are personally recruiting new scientists to expand our
research efforts. Our goal is to develop translational research
programs that can directly benefit our patients. |
